Week 3

Day 11 – Monday, July 7, 2003

         Today, I tried to contact Zhenrong about when we can meet, however I am still waiting for a reply. I spent the day going through pieces of her code, trying to see where she had implemented the EM algorithm but unfortunately I was unable to locate it. I also began reading about the EM algorithm in a book Linda had lent me titled, Computer Vision A Modern Approach. Following this, I had a meeting with Linda. We decided that I should write some code testing major methods of Zhenrong’s program, so that is what I will be working on for the remainder of this week. Other than that, I will continue working on the literature search, and so on.


Day 12 – Tuesday, July 8, 2003

         I spent most of the day today going through Zhenrong’s code and preparing any questions that I have for her. She replied back to me today, and so hopefully we will be meeting this upcoming Saturday to go over her program. I also tried writing some test code and will continue to do so tomorrow to see if I can get some parts of Zhenrong’s program working.


Day 13 – Wednesday, July 9, 2003

         I spent the morning working on test code for Zhenrong’s program. After lunch, I attended the weekly SIRS meeting. It was interesting to hear an overview about the Anatomy of Information Systems, and the projects being worked on by the other research assistants. Since I will be meeting with Zhenrong on Saturday, I need to make sure I understand the key goals of her program, so that I can discuss them at one of the upcoming SIRS meetings. After the meeting, I continued to take a look at Zhenrong’s code.


Day 14 – Thursday, July 10, 2003

         I spent the day writing some sample code so that I can test some of the main methods in Zhenrong’s code. I am having problems trying to compile her code because some of the methods used have been deprecated. Although I am able to correct some of these errors, they only lead to others that I have not been able to successfully fix.


Day 15 – Friday, July 11, 2003

         Today, I downloaded another tool called IrfanView that can convert jpeg images to .ppm format (which is the format needed by Zhenrong’s program). I continued to work on getting my sample code, and her methods to work, but was not able to do so. Also, instead of meeting on Saturday, Zhenrong and I will be meeting on Sunday.
